Western intellectuals ...
" But his ideal picture of peaceful coexistence and cooperation cannot be realized if the West lives in constant fear lest its hegemony be lost, and therefore do its best to prevent others from developing. "

...fine bit o mind reading there...but truth be told, most of America is blissfully ambivalent. (IOW living in peace)...

CLASH OR PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE

Western intellectuals are very much concerned with this question. But they are by no means agreed on the answer. One view is that the clash between Western civilization and others is inevitable, nay that it is already under way. Another view is that the real clash is within Western culture itself.

And if I were an intellectual who pondered this question, what would you say to me if I said to you":

I think the answer is clear,
that peace can always be had...
we live in peace,
ourselves,
you see.

I see a day
when this peace will be attained,
it will be the day
when we no longer say,
that this problem,
can never be solved.

-------------------

anyways, Another view is that you have a bunch of nitballs that think stepping on a bus and exploding one's self will help the hapless soul reach Nirvanna, I'm sorry, that was Valhalla, ooops....I mean paradise, or was that "eternity" ?!

...Heaven?...Perhaps?...

Do you believe in the truth of a man who never wished harm on another to reach his goals? Or do you follow the words that tell you the destruction of children on a crowded bus are a cost of war against an evil enemy? Do you percieve yourself at the heel of oppression when Arab citizens of Israel serve in the Israeli army? Or do you percieve some unmistakable flaw in my logic, one you will surely point out, because you are an all-knowing mind-reader who can read my meaning, intent, and will.... espesially my will...if you think America will bow down before an imposed master, then, you will just have to continue your maniacal ravings.

...If you're pre-disposed to know my opinion, then you are mistaken, my dear friends...

...hmmm where was I?

A third view is that people all over the world are heading toward Western political liberalism and economic capitalism, and that these systems constitute the end of history in these respects. A fourth view is that peaceful coexistence among people of different cultures and civilizations is possible provided they adopt secular pluralistic democracy.

Is there a fourth view?, 5? 6? 517? 1378?

eh?

and that these systems constitute the end of history in these respects

"end of history" ? WTF are you talking about?

A fourth view whew...good thing you got all those "views" down.

What is the Islamic standpoint on this important and urgent issue?

What's with this urgency? Either it has been going on forever, or it will never be solved? Which is it? Did you choose to answer that question? Do you see where peace is, or to you crave control and perfection? Do you see a prevation when you wish for perfection? I tell you that perfection is with you, right now...

...to look toward rage and furor and terror and fear and hate and all that is dark is looking away from God...(IMHO)...at least it doesn't seem to me that you're looking toward the light and toward God....yeah...yeahhh...you know what I mean ;) For those of you in it for the personal power, for those whom fear grips and drive to to madness, for those who've many other problems and feel one sole solution....so many...so many...

..where was I?...

Oh yeah, violence won't win you many battles, you don't know our true will to take care of business, then again perhaps you understand what supporting terrorismm will get you...

You can step up to the plate and take a swing at peace, or you can be another forgotten tyrant...oh yeah, your propoganda will be laughed at by history, for sure for sure...wher ewas I?

But I am not speaking here as a social scientist who describes and explains actual reality; rather I am attempting to describe only theoretically what I consider to be the Islamic standpoint on this issue in our present circumstances.

In other worlds "In a Perfect World".

And my short answer is that it is a standpoint that is unequivocally on the side of peaceful coexistence.

kewl

But to live peacefully with others you need sometimes to be fully prepared for war against them.

WTF?...oh yeah, becuase dumbasses like Hussein would try and tke over trhe world, or at least as much as possible, yeah that's it...uhhh huhhhh.........

Or is it becuase you like to keep this little fantasy floating that the boogie-man is out to get you, and that as long as you keep feeding that monster, you keep drawing it to you...you keep your own little power structure and belief system afloat...all the while sucking the inoccent of their freedom from fear. Feeding the innocent fear and hatred, festering it in them, allowing them power and recourse over others, and yet none for them or you. You will all fall, becuase as much as you dream otherwise, you are nothing compared to the strength of your people. And the people shall always have the final say (though sometimes "the people" get a change forced on them, prefereably for their ultimate betterment, as well as mankind's...yes...wewt...)

where was I?

1. Rationality is an inseparable part of the Islamic religion, and its rationality does include that important ingredient of judging actions by their consequences.

Interesting world-view, did you know that 2*3=6 and 5+1=6 AND! the square root of 36 is six? Or did you believe that your rationality is superior to all others, all the pretenders all teh infidels. eh?

Which camo are you in? Becuase if you believe your logic is unassailable, then I can tell with ease that my logic would be phenomenally better than yours. It's not even close...

but it is of course a rationality which is guided by other Islamic values.

Ahhh there ya go...Do you have a problem with a nation that is based on religious values, yet not run by religion? Would you mind paying a tax so that we don't have to beat the shit out of you? Or was that what you wanted to do to us...dhimmi I think you would say. DO you say? "dear friend"

The preferred action is always the action which results in the greatest good, or the least evil. So will you sacrifice the individual for teh sake of the whole? our listeners would like to know...HOw far are you willing to infringe on teh individual to satisfy the demands of society?

The main goods to be achieved in Islam for example, are ones which would be acceptable, in their general sense, to most people. These are: Spiritual well-being, mental well-being, human life, human wealth and honor.

What's up with that "honor" part? Can't we all just get along and put the fists down? OR are do you still want to behave like children?

peaceful coexistence and cooperation is definitely to be preferred over wars and clashes in normal circumstances.

I can dig it.

it's getting late..I'lll keep reading and stop commenting now...

lgf: Muslim Speaker Attacks Israel at MLK Tribute
Rahman said yesterday he has no regrets or apologies to offer, because "from my vantage point it was also a political event."

"As a Muslim, I don't make a separation between religion and politics," he said in a phone interview. "Religion and politics are intertwined and there is absolutely no separation for me at all.

"I was there as a representative of my faith community, and I said what was most pressing on my heart.

"If other people were offended by it, it just proves my point - that sometimes people who espouse liberal values, when it rubs them the wrong way, it reveals their liberalism doesn't go very deep at all."

you lose

If you're gonna speak some bulshit, Everyone has a right to repudiate it. The fact that you complain about people bitching about your torrid nonsense tells me you don't have an argument or a clue....blah blah blah...keep bitching dipshit, when you decide you want to pull a gun, we'll be there to take you down....tell your friends that's the way it is until YOU actually DO practice a religion of peace.

Until then, I'm willing to take you at your word, interesting perspective though, melding politics and religion...have you managed to fit celestial mechanics in there yet?...I didn't think so...you probably think WE melt religion and politics together then, no? Then you are wrong and still a fool...hey, I'm just telling it like it is...

...indeed...if you wish to meld religion and politics and spronkle a little world-domination on top, then I am afraid you will have to go, you will lose, adn you will never know why...because your view of the world is so warped that you won't understand how we really have overtaken your society...

..but it won't seemlike we've taken over your society when your grandchildren enjoy the fruits of peace and prosperity...the peace that your progeney will embrace willingly. heehee

In the mean-time, if you think you can take over the world by force, I've got bad news for ya. No one has done it yet, and I don't see a back-assward society pulling it off.

And yes, that creator that created you created me too.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said that Mr Sharon's statement was a sign that "the only plan he has is for the continuation of walls, occupation and settlements".

It seems there's shitloads of 'em, fed wrong information about how best to improve economy...This would be a passing glance at the idiocy of some European Economic thoughts, and yes, we have plenty a damn fewls in this great country too. And they wonder why we are so prosperous...it's not like it's hard to replicate.

But then you need a moral people quite intollerent at the hint of corruption...Do you?

i translate as him saying: "neoliberal economic ideology" I love it when people start referring to modern thought in somewhat archaic terms...is he going to start reaching back 700 years to defend his reasoning for the destruction of israel next? I'l be honest with ya, I'm not into being labeled as something I'm not, and would not use such a dumbass, long winded phrase like "neoliberal economic ideology" - so finely worded to get a slam in on some. How long did it take you to write that dude? Like ten minutes? OOOooh you're so smart....

:/

"Instead, he played the role of economist,"

Please children, don't play the role of expert economist at home. It's dangerous and will quite often make you look like a fewl. Did I mention I was an econ undergrad at the U of C? The maroon one. Please, take me on ;)

I mean, come on...everyone knows political scientists are fools as economists.

heeheehee

BLING BLING BLING!!!

What did I tell ya? I can call 'em ... sad thing is, economists make better political scientists (and lovers :P)

But Dr. Robinson goes on to argue that, not only does Mexico's experience disprove the ideology of free-market economi

eh? How long has the American system been in place now? And Mexico's free economy? Oh yeah, tell me when they get there to that free economy.

But I guess it takes a Ph.D. in political science to believe that China's economic growth has less to do with the rather dramatic free-market reforms started under Deng Xiaoping in the 1980s and entering the world economy than it has to do with the Chinese government maintaining capital controls.

heehee...called another one...I like the piling on the polysci morons (you pussies who think I'm generalizing can insert the words "who are" between the words plysci and morons, to make yourself feel better knowing a finer definition of my meaning, so you won't have to burden yourself with the hate you would create in your heart because you're a dumbass who can't reconcile others brevity of words with the depths of a soul)

...but I digress...

Rather, I am interested in the growing trend (or so it seems to me) of political scientists, sociologists, and other practitioners of the "social sciences" to masquerade as economists or otherwise to enhance their "expertise" using as cover some university-sponsored "institute."

ahh yes, you've nailed it Brandon.

"Indeed, the Labor and Global Change Program is the recent creation of Dr. Robinson, and he seems to have created it in his own image. "

This is because these dumbasses can create any damn institute they want, as long as it or they can get funded. I plan one day to open the Study of Phenomenally Bad Economic Thinkers Institute ...

... Hey buddy, can ya spare a chair?...

who, oddly, is listed as the Program's sole "co-director")

LMFAO Hey buddy, makes some friends here and there and cross-polinate with your like minded morons friends and their "institutes." Tell me, again, why should I take you seriously? Please don't pass me that Yale PhD line again, take a guess how many thousands of PhD's have sought me for advice.

...heeheehee...that one just popped in my mind...

You might think I'm lying or boasting or whatever impluses and motives you want to project as belonging to me. (someone help me with a shorter phrase for that) But you don't know me.

In fairness to Michigan

In fairness to Michigan, this is what happens when you say "We need one more labor oriented political scientist this year"

courtesy of inclusion of one faculty member from the Michigan Business School.

I wonder if this is another garden variety "get me on another committee Shirley" b-school prof. Or if he thinks "what the hell is wrong with this guy?"

One of the examples I found was an extraordinary article in the alumni magazine of Ithaca College in New York. This embarrassingly idiotic piece by professor Asma Barlas argued that we should not be asking the question "why do the terrorists hate us?" but, rather, "why do we hate and oppress them?" The United States, according to the good professor, has had as its goal since the end of World War II, "control over the entire world by any means necessary,"

I have to laugh at how sad a "scholar" this guy is.

The president of Ithaca College predictably defended Barlas on the basis of "academic freedom." Unfortunately, many university administrations now see the protection of "academic freedom" (at least for left-wing or anti-American professors) as more important than the protection of academic integrity.

"Academic Freedom" is basically the excuse you use to save a dumbass from himself. As far as "Academic Integrity" goes, the problem is this little matter we in the real world like to refer to as "the truth". Hello retarded faculty committees, start booting these morons from your midst, they're bringing your own and your instiitution's credibility down. History gets a laugh at you too.

To quote professor Barlas, this is greatly needed at Ithaca College and elsewhere because "[e]ven where the academy has opened up parts of its curriculum to diversity initiatives, it has done so piecemeal and without abandoning the secular fundamentalist myth of US invincibility abroad and white racial supremacy at home."

Eh?! wtf are you talking about?!

Do they promote true meaningful scholarship, or do they promote politically based "research" and "teaching"?

...and poisoning young minds with their ignorance.

But I think finding that out would be a good research project for somebody in academe.

lmao...see above ;)

People Who Mislead People
"Sensing some vaguely hypocritical backpedaling, People asked the Deans, 'Do you have a moral opposition to performing the procedure? I mean, you're both physicians, you at some point --' Howard Dean cut the interviewer off, saying, 'I think that's a private matter between the physician and the patient. I don't have a moral problem, but neither of us is trained to do abortions. We're both internists. Internists don't do abortions. It would be malpractice if we did.'

This answer deserves further journalistic scrutiny, especially since Vermont is a state which allows non-physicians to perform abortions. If non-physicians can perform abortions in Vermont, why can't internists, especially one who served on the board of Planned Parenthood?

'There is absolutely nothing to prevent an internist from doing an abortion in Vermont,' says Vermont Right to Life head Mary Hahn Beerworth to TAS. 'This is just smoke and mirrors. There is no law in place preventing him from doing abortions if he wanted to.' "

Ya know, at some point you really have to cross off a candidate from having any hope of being elected. Clark has already fallen into that category (it's somewhere below I imagine, but I forget, and isn't that the point?)

Might as well cross Dean off and stop reading this article now...All the things I hear about him put him right in the whacko category at some point, certainly so with some abstractions.

obscene misrepresentation of reality

(in genereal this is directed to those who's view of reality is distorted)

...haven't seen it so I suppose I'd like to judge for myself, but I think the quote above beautifully codifies my thoughts on what "people over there" (pick your locale) have a problem with...They've become so wrapped up in their own explanations of history and honor and what-not that they've been blinded by an oft told lie which then became truth somewhere along the line.

Damn fools need to expand their minds and understand others views of the world and life and love and on and on and on...Take your pick: among the highly educated liberal "elites" (scare quotes intended, these people aren't elite, I went to a fine maroon school, I can easily tell the difference...the funny thing is that a reasonable person paying attention or given the evidence of these clown's views would also laugh/decry/deride many of these fewls too) among the "oppresed in Palestine" (where is this "palestine" you speak of? I do not think it means what you think it means. And who is feeding their minds with hate and oppression again?) among the Backward Europeans ( I just made that one up, think about it. ) among the poor, the rich, the middle class, the environmental zealots, those who see themselves as uniquely oppressed and wish to turn the world's focus and worldview on themselves, and on and on..you who shout from the left.

Yes, obviously we all have our own world views, but I'll tell you this. If your world is stuck in hate and revenge and envy and pride mode, then you don't see the world I see, you don't enjoy the blessing I enjoy, you aren't as prosperous as me.

Every dollar you have was given to you by someone else. (or have you stolen it?) ...so it is with blessings...but then you don't see money the same way I do, now do you? Do you see it as a tool of state control or an enumerator of value, the value you have given for that piece of paper? (or have you stolen it?) Value you can trade to another.

And what have you of value to trade for my good will, you who would drive a people "to the sea"? And here you wish to present your obscene misrepresentation of reality to me, hoping one day an entire country will bend to your view of the world. I got news for ya, it isn't happening.

Billow hot in the winds you fewls, your rantings are amusing to history. You are a nuisance, and just another challenge along the line of long history, you luddites of the world of ideas.

...but I digress...

Pedagogy of hate
Hello World,

"If you want to know what's really at the heart of the Palestinian conflict with Israel, don't ask politicians or diplomats. Go to Palestinian children. "

They've been brainwashed, and generations of Palestinians will continue to be brainwashed until we do something substantial to solve this problem.

Unlike the rest of the world, they've been paying close attention to what their leaders and educators have been teaching. And they are ready to practice what they've been taught.

HELLO WORLD!!!!

For instance, children interviewed on PA TV last week state without reservation that Israel has no right to exist, and that the goal for which they're willing to sacrifice their lives is Israel's destruction.

"They [the Jews] came to take Palestine, that is, Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Haifa, Acre, Ramle. All these cities belong to Palestine," one youth explains in a December 25 broadcast, echoing years of standard Palestinian Authority indoctrination.

And because he is convinced that Israel has no right to exist: "We hope, hope, hope and I emphasize these things, that the Arab countries and the foreign countries – all the countries of the world – will support the Palestinians and will expel the Israelis.

"We must expel all Israelis from Palestine. Because Israel – there is nothing called 'Israel' in the world. The Israelis [came] from Holland, America, Iran."

HELLO!?!?!

None of this is surprising to anyone who has been paying attention to what does on in the PA educational system. Israel is erased from PA maps, schoolbooks and historians deny Israel's right to exist, and educators at all levels teach that Israel is a foreign colonial implant.

Start attention people, so we can get this problem solved.

SUCH MESSAGES of delegitimization have been affirmed by Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei. He is on record as rejecting the idea of Israel as a Jewish state. "President Bush said that Israel is a Jewish state, which is a cause for our concern. This should not have been said," he told Al-Nahar and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida on June 15, 2003.

So should I be pissed off when you say Saudi Arabia is an Islamic state? Has this state steped over the line? Unless they make true changes, I say the oil be damned and we remove them from power. If you don't like it, if you think it is imperialistic, that's just too bad.

WELCOME TO SOVEREIGNTY!

Consequently, when we view children on PA TV who say they want to destroy Israel, to liberate Tel Aviv, Jaffa, Haifa, Acre, and Ramle, and to expel the Jews, we are seeing children who are accurately regurgitating the sentiments inculcated and reinforced throughout PA society.

It is time to change their society. War is hell, isn't it?

Indeed, years of anti-Israel indoctrination have been alarmingly effective in teaching Palestinian youth that the Jews have no link to Israel, that Israel has no right to exist and that the overriding goal of the next generation – even at the cost of their lives – should be to eliminate Israel.

The essence of the conflict is Israel's very right to exist – not the question of borders or refugees. Peace negotiations that do not address the PA's system of indoctrination will be short-term paper agreements doomed to failure.

Palestinian children have already figured this out. Perhaps the rest of us need to stay after school.

Start doing the research yourself people. The truth is out there...

...go find it.

In response to "Abu"
The entirety of my comments:
-------------------------------------------------------------------

Happy New Year Zeyad! :D

Thanks for posting this information. I know that random power outages are a pain in the ass. We get them in the winter around here in some locales, and here and there when the weather goes knocking trees all over the lines in some town some where. (I keep rechargable batteries and radios and candles in preparation for such occaisions. And really, for short periods of time it can be a nice break from the everyday) But of course for hours on end all the time sucks hard. :/

Keep the occaisional power info coming, for sure. Not all of us over here are going to be taking the time to wander around here and there to specifically ascertain what the power situation is in Iraq. You bringing it up opens the eyes of those who come *here* to get your assessment of reality in Iraq....I LIKE IT! It gives us "ammunition" (if you will) to use against those who like to argue with their warped world views.

...which brings me to the Abu's of the world...

To the Abu's of the world:

"The question is what is the difference between today's cowardly acts of sabotage and yesterday's smart sanctions if the results are the same shortages in power supply?"

I hope you have truly pondered this question. Your name belies your ignorance at some level. (Should I assume you wish Israel be driven to the sea, then?) Perhaps you think that American obstruction and a desire to oppress an Arab people was the aim...Perhaps you think that making life difficult for the Iraqis will prove how little Americans can do to improve the lives of average Iraqis?

Are you asking if the ends justify the means? While an equivalent end may be achieved by many different means, you are mistaken if you believe that these were the same ends: "the same shortages in power supply?" Indeed the shortages are not only different, but also these means don't lead to the same conclusion: power shortages...

Where did saddam's money go? How many palaces did he construct? How much should we mourn that the "saddam niche" in sculpting has fallen on hard times? Should we pity the poor companies no longer able to fullfill orders for gold-plated sink fixtures?

We will only support so much insanity. We have a saying: don't throw good money after bad. I wonder if any energetic reporters can beat the government in reporting where saddam's money actually went. I doubt any can given the resources the US is using to sift through the docmunets of saddam's regime. Will any reporters tell us that, given the cost of facilities and instructor time, transportation and what-not, that it costs saddam only about 600 thousand dollars to sneak in 24 AQ and train them in airplane hijacking...explosives, chemical weapons?

...then again perhaps someone will point me in the right direction...but I digress...

The truth is, you are attempting to rationalize the motives of Americans and project the motives of local terrorists as equivalent...in other words you think we think as terrorists do...You think our actions are laced with ill-intent, when nothing could be further from the truth. You think we wish Arabs to live in poverty, this is certainly untrue. We wish you as great a prosperity as we posess.

We wish you to be the best of friends, happy to greet you with warm tidings. Ahallen wu good fields and what-not... ;)

But it is you who wish to force us and others to *your* will...

...I think not...

We can argue on bravado and penis size and what-not. God has blessed you to walk this earth, but he hasn't blessed you with the ability to force us to your knee...perhaps because you would if you could...and yet we have people here in the United States bitching about how we shouldn't be "the Police Force" of the world...

...and really we don't want to be...I'm always amazed at how mis-informed some foreign writers are seriously retarded when it comes to reading the American mindset...so off, so wrong...sometimes it smacks of ill-will too...unfortunately one has only so much time to fiske so many people...

...and is a life spent parying fools all I want to do? Perhaps if it were renumerative, but I don't see that happening, don't pursue those offers, and honestly don't want to be a
"policeman" of sorts...you get my drift? I want Iraq back in the "friend" category and move on with life...do other things...you wonder why we are "dumb americans"- we have better things to do than ponder the internal functionings of a hundred other govenments...ours works reasonably well enough that the majority are so disconnected from this "madness" we talk about and read about on these boards that they really do live in a state where "ignorance is bliss." Here we are free to point our minds and energies in the directions we choose to focus on.

I know many people who pay minute attention to the details of the world, others who are wondering if they will be able to save enough money to pay for their car insurance. A war on terror isn't going to change the fact that someone needs their sewer line rodded...

...where was I "Abu"?...

...you can be a friend or you can make yourself an enemy...its your choice...you mis-judge our true intentions and our culture...you propogate wild fantasies about how the world works..."Abu" if you wish to kill our friends we will keep them armed, well-armed...you are picking a fight you will never win. you can argue left and right about Allah being on your side, will one day make you victorious and all that...It doesn't change the fact that we could, at any moment, pull any Arab country we wish to down...pushed far enough and obviously we will...

we have

...and as the dictator of Libya has just shown, our leverage on those who lead your Arab countries are aware of our inclinations and abilities. Either they will put pressure on you Abu's of the world, or we will pressure them...how hard remains to be seen, no? Ahhh the joys of diplomacy and sovereignty :D

So Abu Hadi, tell me what you may have against America? What is your true aim? Do you wish that Sharia be the law of the earth, by the sword if neccessary? That Israel cease to exist? Your swords are no match for our bullets, and no match for our pen...certainly not while you call yourself Abu.

We are children of the same creator. The fatwas I've read indicate Muslim religious leaders don't really know what that means when I say it. I wish they did, it's not a multiple-choice statement...

...but i digress...

excuse the rambling, there's a point in there somewhere...if you are an "Abu", I challenge you to use your super-powers of argument and logic to pick it apart...hey feel free to try and use God as a club, you can do me no harm.
